Democratizing Development Walking Tour – January

Hats off (or on, it was pretty chilly) to everyone who warmed up with us over MLK Weekend for our Democratizing Development Capitol View Walking Tour! Civil Bikes worked with Capitol View residents to codesign and lead a interactive neighborhood walk, led by neighbors Diane and Ms. C, that focused on embodying the histories and envisioning the futures of the neighborhood through the lens of development.

The development process is one that’s kept deliberately opaque, and the people most impacted are often the least and last informed. The goal of Democratizing Development is for residents to build community capacity, knowledge and power to understand and impact what’s happening around us. On the tour, residents shared their views and desires for the neighborhood, met with local project developers and legacy residents, and learned ways to address issues to local government.

Thanks so much to our partners who joined and shared with us — Urban Oasis Development, Chad Livsey, West ATL Watershed Alliance, Invest Atlanta, Zach Adriaenssens, Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Trees Atlanta, with delicious empanadas and hot cider from Everything Empanadas and 404 Grounds!
